Post-grafitti art is somewhat unique in this concept of "generational art". In this case, the original grafitti -a work of art as manifest by its maker either visual, literal or both- is altered by someone else who is generally not one who considers themselves an artist. More importantly, they do not perceive their act of painting out an existing item of grafitti as an act of producing art. Interestingly enough, they often do not see their act as one that is destroying art either. Nevertheless, in my eye, this next generation manifestation of the original forms becomes, through my interpretation, again a work of art. By selecting these original four elements within the post-grafitti as I do, I am offering yet another generation of art originally placed by the grafitti artist. I find it intriguing to follow behind the "non-artist" phase or generation of a particular work especially when the resultant play of elements is so rich. The significance lies within the process of selecting everyday visual images and responding to select elements within these images. Consciously or not, the "non-artist" is nevertheless responding to the forms in such a way as to interact with them by altering them thus leaving behind another unique collection of elements. It arguably becomes, in essence, an act of art at a primitive level. The documentation of this process is what the post-grafitti series is all about. |
